The Rug Bug, Route 51

Since 1970 Pittsburgh
Home of the Rug Bug

A Route 51 legend, parked out front for 56 years.

In 1970, Frank and Betty Lou Dorfner opened Pittsburgh's very first remnant carpet store on Route 51. They had a simple idea: buy first-quality carpet in bulk, pass the savings on to their neighbors, and treat every customer like family.

But Frank wasn't the kind of guy who just sold carpet. He built the Rug Bug, a fully carpeted Volkswagen Beetle, and parked it out front as a handshake to the neighborhood. It quickly became a Saw Mill Run landmark, the kind of thing kids pointed at from the back seat on the way to school.

The Rug Bug still sits outside our showroom today, 56 years later. Weathered, adored, and entirely itself.

It represents who we are. Scrappy. Creative. Authentic. And after more than half a century, still unforgettable.

The Family Out Front

Meet Lisa and Leanna.

A mother-and-daughter team leading a woman-owned and operated family business. Second and third generation, working the same showroom floor.

2nd Generation

Lisa

Daughter of Frank and Betty Lou. Lisa has spent decades learning every inch of this business, from the mills down south in Georgia to the installer van in your driveway. If you've got a question about carpet, she's heard it before, and she'll give you a straight answer.

3rd Generation

Leanna

Granddaughter of the founders. Leanna brings a modern approach to everything from the samples on the floor to the way we show up online, all while honoring the family playbook her grandparents wrote in 1970.

A woman-owned and operated family business.

Lisa and Leanna lead the day-to-day, the installer crew, the showroom, and the plans for what comes next. It's the family you expect, with the perspective you might not.

What We Believe

Four things that have not changed since 1970.

Trends come and go. These don't.

First-Quality, Always

We only sell first-quality carpet, even the remnants. Bulk buying direct from the mills lets us offer unbeatable prices without ever compromising on the carpet itself.

Personal Accountability

The same installer who measures your space does the installation. No handoffs, no blaming the other guy, no excuses when something needs to be made right.

Family Values

Three generations have treated every customer like a neighbor. No pressure. No nonsense. Just honest advice from people who live here and plan to stay.

Built to Last

Our warranties, our installer partnerships, our relationships with mills. Everything we do is built for the long haul, because that's how we've stayed in business for 56 years.

Pittsburgh Proud

Made in the South Hills. Loved across Pittsburgh.

We have been a part of this city's weekends, weddings, and Sunday dinners for more than half a century. Our customers come from Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Dormont, Brentwood, Venetia, Peters Township, and every corner of the South Hills in between.
